I can’t remember a time when I didn’t make art. I have always loved the bright colors in a box of crayons, and always asked for art supplies for Christmas. I have studied art from the age of 6 until the present. My junior year of college I traveled to Italy to further my knowledge of art and art history. The experiences I had there shaped my current aesthetic and also made me realize the importance of art in my life. I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor in fine arts and I am currently working from my home in Sugar House.
My most recent body of work is a series of figural narratives. They are based on my own observations and memories. Sometimes the figures in these paintings are characters illustrating my own feelings, emotions, and experiences. Sometimes I merely set the stage and allow the characters to tell their own story for others to observe. I have left the background purposely ambiguous to emphasize the narrative quality of the figures even when isolated. People define their landscape through their dress, expressions and activities. By incorporating found objects I further describe the situations and environments that these people exist in. These objects are usually collected while I am gathering reference material for a particular body of work. In addition to contributing to the environmental quality of each scene they become compositional elements. The objective of my work is to preserve these moments of human interaction, to make the viewer stop and notice them, and hopefully gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty of these daily occurrences.
